How We Research
Every guide on TheUsefulOne starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our ice maker guides, that means the kind of ice you want, how much of it you need and how much cleaning you'll take on.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the ice type and daily output
Nugget ice and bullet ice come from different machines. Nugget is soft and chewable, and bullet is harder and cone-shaped.
We check the ice type, the daily output the maker lists, the size of the ice bin and whether the machine uses a manual fill or a water line.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at size, the water reservoir, self-cleaning modes and the cleaning steps in the manual. We also note the noise level and warranty terms the maker lists.
When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a machine. We look for patterns, like units that stop making ice, loud compressors, leaks or scale that builds up fast.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers also rename models, change sizes and swap parts, so we check each machine's name and details before we write about it.
When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have made ice with every machine we cover.
Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. Follow it for cleaning, descaling, water type, placement and power.
We make no health or food-safety promises about any machine, its water or its ice. When a maker uses a term like antimicrobial or BPA-free, we label it as the maker's claim.
